I was following the Boston Marathon this week (it happened on Monday!), and while I was watching I stumbled upon something called the “Kipchoge Challenge”.

If you don’t know who Eliud Kipchoge is, he’s the fastest long distance runner in the world– his official record is 2 hours and a minute in competition, but he’s run below 2 hours before. That’s 13 miles in one hour!

But how might you put that speed into perspective? Some people were curious, and that is where the “Kipchoge Challenge” came in: The task was to find out how long you could run at Kipchoge’s marathon pace of 13 mph.

I didn’t actually do the challenge but I watched a few Youtube videos, and it was humbling to witness nonetheless. I was finding that even very fit people would last only about 1–2 minutes at his pace.

How does a person run at 13 mph for 2 hours straight?
