How I enjoy fried chicken

What they don’t teach you about healthy eating

I have a confession to make: I love fried chicken.

I love southern-style fried chicken, and I love Japanese-style karaage. I like them in sandwiches, and I like them on their own. When I traveled to South Korea over the summer, I let myself enjoy as many fried chickens as my heart desired– there was no worrying about calories, fat, or sugar.

Sorry I keep talking about fried chicken, but I have a point.

When you’re trying to learn the ways of a healthy life, the last thing you think you’d read about is eating fried chicken. You probably joined my newsletter expecting to learn about fitness, cooking with vegetables, and the art of living a healthy life.

But what most people don’t realize is that you can live a perfectly healthy, happy, and fulfilling life while still eating fried chicken– or any “bad for you” food for that matter.

How I enjoy fried chicken

My new favorite fried chicken spot is a Korean restaurant that serves them in sticky, soy-garlic sauce. It’s super crispy, juicy, and they don’t skimp on the flavor.

Now, fried chicken is not necessarily something we should be eating by the bucket– besides not being great for our bodies, we also physically would not feel good eating it in copious amounts.

But as a side dish to a more well-rounded meal? It’s perfect.

Instead of ordering fried rice, I put together a quick bowl of white rice cooked with carrots, steamed spinach, broccoli, and a poached egg. From the restaurant I ordered fried chicken, and a plate of steamed tofu with kimchi (a stellar combination).

A half-takeout, half-home cooked meal– while on special occasions and holidays I am quite good about indulging myself, on the average day when I’m craving something like fried chicken but also wanting to be mindful of eating something good for my body, this is how I do it.
