A warm-light lamp.

That was the only difference between me reading a book every two weeks, and going an entire 6 months without reading anything and being chronically underslept.

It was a minor detail I thought, when I was moving apartments and had forgotten to get a little lamp to put beside my bed. I figured that this was no big deal, how important could a single lamp be in my life?

Oh, but how the small things matter.

The lamp meant that I could turn off the overhead harsh, white fluorescent lights and instead move around in the warm orange glow of my lamp the hour before I went to sleep.

The lamp also meant that I could read a book right before I decided to close my eyes, without having to get up from bed.

And choosing to read a book before going to sleep meant that I wouldn’t be on my phone during that time. It allowed me to disconnect from the world, and find that internal peace necessary to fall asleep when it feels there is so much going on in my head. Growing sleepy, then finally asleep.
